Showella (1995)
Chestnut mare by Lord Ballina x Show Queen (Balmerino)
20 Starts: 6 - 2 - 5, $523,900
Media Excerpts:
"Mapperley Heights (NZ), a daughter of Sir Tristram (IRE), won the SA Derby in 1984 and she proved to be a broodmare gem for the Douglas family in New Zealand. The only other filly to win the SA Derby since has been Showella (NZ), a daughter of Lord Ballina, in 1999."
"Four-year-old Safwan is by Encosta de Lago out of the Lord Ballina mare Showella, who won six races between 1600/2500m including a Gr 1 in New Zealand and the Gr 1 South Australian Derby.
A $250,000 purchase from the Coolmore draft at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Safwan is a half-brother to multiple Group II winner Showcause and the Sheikh’s Australian based stakes-winner Safwa being from former star dual Group I winning stayer Showella (NZ), who died in 2008 with Safwan her final foal.
By leading broodmare sire Lord Ballina, Showella was a grand-daughter of champion New Zealand mare Show Gate.
Her daughter Safwa had been at stud here in Australia for the Sheikh until her premature death this year, her first foal, a two year-old colt by Fusaichi Pegasus has already been sent to South Africa as has her second, a yearling filly by Encosta de Lago."
2007: "Trainer John O'Shea has no doubt the best is yet to come from emerging stayer Safwa.
The daughter of New Zealand Derby winner Showella let down with the type of acceleration shown by good horses when tearing away with yesterday's Epona Stakes.
'It is nice to have a horse that can get a mile and a quarter (2000m), a mile and a half (2400m) with a turn of foot,' O'Shea said."
2011: "Also successful in the New Zealand Cup, Showcause is from Showella, a winner of two Group1s, the South Australian Derby and Auckland Lion Red Stakes, by Lord Ballina an Australian bred son of Bletchingly who had a distinguished career as a sire in New Zealand.
Showcause’s grandam Show Queen is bred on a cross of two revered racehorses produced in New Zealand, being by Balmerino (21 wins, New Zealand Derby, Wellington Derby, Brisbane Cup, etc; second Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe) and from Show Gate (30 wins in New Zealand, Awapuni Gold Cup, Trentham Stakes, Canterbury Gold Cup).
Bred by D. Dean, Victoria and sent to New Zealand as a late weanling, the Auckland Cup runner up is by the Darley sire Reset, an Australian bred son of Zabeel who ran only at three and won all five starts, including the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield and the Australian Guineas at Flemington.
He had two runners at the meeting, the other being Yourein, a close third in the Group 2 Championship Stakes over 2100m for 3-year-olds won by the High Chaparral gelding Hidden Asset."
