Our Favorite Things About KY

We lived in KY and we register a breed that is sourced in KY; might as well call us a KY stable....And what good's a Kentucky Stable without some reference to the single most famous race in the nation?

Churchill Downs is storied and somewhat legendary. The twin spires that it is most well known for were remodeled in 2007, but the official postcards still show the grandstands as they were pre-remodel.

The Official Churchill Downs Kentucky Derby Mint Julep

The Early Times Mint Julep Recipe

2 cups sugar
2 cups water
Sprigs of fresh mint
Crushed ice
Early Times Kentucky Whisky
Silver Julep Cups

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

The best times are enjoyed responsibly.
Early Times Distillery Co., Kentucky Whisky. 40% Alc. By Volume. Louisville, KY ©2006.

----------------------

The Downs uses Early Times, but Tom Sims KY and Makers Mark will work just as well. The key is that the sugar must be boiled into a syrup and the whiskey must be KY brew. Dried mint may be used, but ideally it should be fresh sprigs.

Use genuine ("geen-yu-wine") KY ("Kane-tucky") product and you'll have a genuine Kentucky Julep...anything else is just booze.

In a stat with the first step of the Triple Crown it behooves us to remember the Greats: The Battle between Sunday Silence and Easy Goer is one that many recall when they think of the TC races. Easy Goer stood at stud at Claiborne Farm up in Paris, Ky (near Lexington). He resided in the same stall that housed Bold Ruler, Secretariat, and Unbridled.

Claiborne was the birthplace of Forty Niner, Bold Ruler, Buckpasser, Swale, Caerleon, Pulpit, and Easy Goer. Claiborne is currently home to Champions Seeking the Gold, Monarchos, Blame (the horse that beat Zenyatta), and Arch (sire of Blame).

Claiborne is the final resting place of Easy Goer, Bold Ruler, Secretariat, and Unbridled as well as Swale, Mr. Prospector, Gallant Fox, Blenheim II, Buckpasser, Nijinsky, Princequillo, Nasrullah, Sir Gallahad, Danzig, Pulpit, and Champion (Claiborne-bred) Filly Personal Ensign..
