What's a Kentucky Stable without some reference to the single most famous race in the nation?
Churchill Downs is on the south side of Louisville and about 2 hours travel from the farm by horse trailer. It is storied and somewhat legendary. The twin spires that it is most well known for were remodeled in 2007, but the official postcards still show the grandstands as they were pre-remodel.

2 cups sugar
2 cups water
Sprigs of fresh mint
Crushed ice
Early Times Kentucky Whisky
Silver Julep Cups
Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
The Downs uses Good Times, but Tom Sims KY and Makers Mark will work just as well. The key is that the sugar must be boiled into a syrup and the whiskey must beKY brew. Dried mint may be used, but ideally it should be fresh sprigs.
